Debunking the Car Freedom Myth: Push for Sustainable Mobility

Paolo Scaramuzza's essay critiques the myth of cars as symbols of freedom, highlighting their environmental, economic, and social constraints. Drawing on historical and cultural insights, it advocates for sustainable alternatives like public transit and cycling. It points to experimental models where shared, autonomous fleets replace personal ownership, potentially slashing emissions by up to 80% according to recent studies. Scaramuzza builds on this by critiquing the psychological allure of cars, noting how advertising perpetuates a false sense of control while entrenching social isolation. In the evolving discourse on urban mobility, a growing chorus of voices is challenging the long-held notion that personal automobiles embody ultimate freedom. Paolo Scaramuzza’s recent essay, published on his personal blog, dissects this myth with precision, arguing that cars, far from liberating individuals, often impose hidden constraints on society.Drawing from historical and cultural perspectives, Scaramuzza posits that the car’s promise of autonomy is illusory, overshadowed by environmental costs, urban sprawl, and economic burdens that disproportionately affect lower-income communities.Scaramuzza traces the car’s ascent to cultural icon status back to the mid-20th century, when aggressive marketing campaigns equated vehicle ownership with independence. Yet, he contends, this narrative ignores the systemic dependencies it creates—reliance on fossil fuels, expansive infrastructure, and perpetual maintenance.

Car Harms Monday: Cars Make Us More Lonely - Streetsblog New York City

The specter of road violence keeps people from interacting. And you can blame cars for that. ... Traffic is a toxic force in the social life of our city. As traffic increases, it seems, social life breaks down first between those living on opposite sides of the street: The graphic that created a movement.Donald Appleyard · In New York City, multiple generations of advocates have long pushed public officials to continue a nation-leading, but tedious, effort to decongest our streets and claw back car space for public space and other forms of clean and shared transportation.A business-as-usual approach will surely lead to more car harms, including increased isolation, a feature long baked into America’s land use and transportation policies. On the ground, this means, parents or other caregivers will continue to drive kids to school, depriving them of the social and health benefits that come from walking or biking.Vivek Murthy declared loneliness to be a national epidemic. The proclamation was backed by a well-researched, 82-page advisory report, which was released just as the worst viral impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic began to fade and the longer-term effects — like increased social isolation — were becoming known. Most recently, an avalanche of five-year pandemic retrospectives has outlined the ways Covid-19 altered our lives, including the acceleration of what journalist DerekThompson calls the “anti-social century.” We are simply spending more time at home, often alone, and less time out in our physical communities.

With Cached-DFL, however, scientists have created a quasi-social network where cars can view each other's profile page of driving discoveries — all without sharing the driver’s personal information or driving patterns.Self-driving vehicles currently use data stored in one central location, which also increases the chances of large data breaches. Why we become emotionally attached to our cars

Cars are a safe space (Photo: Dave & Les Jacobs/Getty/Digital Vision) We are social creatures who want and need a sense of belonging. When we get in our cars, we have to interact with everyone else who is in their own bubble. They are our own small bubbles where we can curate who comes in and out, or decide if we want any noise or to listen to anything, and where we can cry or take a deep breath. When your car door shuts, you gain a sense of privacy and time to reflect. It might be the vehicle in which you passed your driving test, first kissed your wife, or brought home your newborn baby. Cars also remind us of people who perhaps are no longer with us but whom we used to drive to see, or sang songs with, or shared a road trip with. This can bring up all kinds of emotions and feelings that we perhaps have not previously allowed ourselves to process. Cars can also foster a sense of nostalgia, which is a nice feeling in a world of constant change. It’s the August bank holiday weekend and all across the UK, people are having time off and enjoying what the summer has left to offer, with a plethora of events, festivals and activities such as car shows.

One of the main groups impacted by the ‘unfreedom’ of cars is children. There has been a massive drop in the physical geographical freedom and independence we allow children to have.Back in 1974, Austrian philosopher Ivan Illich wrote ‘Energy and Equity’ in which he calculated that the “typical American male” spent 4 out of 16 waking hours either driving or working to pay for his car. That’s a quarter of conscious life dedicated to a machine that sits unused 96% of the time. Beyond the huge social and environmental costs of cars, private car ownership exerts enormous financial pressure on individual households.Car dependency has fundamentally altered how communities function. When daily life requires driving everywhere, public space becomes transit space rather than social space.Alas! In a direct demonstration of motonormativity (the assumption is made that car ownership and use is an unremarkable social norm), I was offered lots of gripes about cars from the perspective of car owners and drivers, and no actual critique of car ownership and use itself…

Drivers warned social media 'car wash trend' could lead to thousands in repair bills - The Mirror

Hundreds of videos have been posted on social media - of fans washing their vehicle and while this may appear harmless - many are just one move away from damaging their vehicle A social media craze that sees users dancing, spraying foam and even climbing on top of their cars could end up costing drivers thousands in repairs, experts have warned. He explained: "Even if you are careful with the cleaning materials you use and the paint and protective layers are kept intact, the dancing and stunts encouraged in the videos often lead to the users standing on the bonnets or roofs of their cars, which could lead to dents, big scratches or cracks in the panels. And it’s not just clambering across cars that could land people in trouble, he also warned: “In addition, the trend suggests going nuts with a pressure washer, but you need to be careful when using such a powerful stream, as it could damage smaller, more fragile parts of your car such as windscreen wipers, mirrors or plastic trims, but it could equally damage the chrome and paint.”Mr Clamp added: “The harsh DIY cleaning mixtures recommended in some of the videos (often equal parts vinegar and coconut oil) could be potentially harmful to your vehicle’s surfaces, such as the paint. The acidity in the vinegar could corrode clear coats, contributing to a dull finish on your car over time, and coconut oil could actually erode the finish entirely.

Social Cars

The focus of SocialCars is on significantly improving future urban road traffic, through cooperative approaches. “How can individual travelers make optimal use of the transport infrastructure, so that safety is increased and congestion and pollution are reduced?” is the key question. The focus of the second funding period of SocialCars is on addressing challenges that arise when considering the implications of automated mixed traffic scenarios and novel mobility services for dynamic traffic management. At the Niedersächsische Forschungszentrum Fahrzeugtechnik (NFF), scientists of the cooperating universities Braunschweig, Clausthal and Hanover benefit from interdisciplinary team work in the process of solving issues involving SocialCars.SocialCars aims to answer this question by investigating the interaction between centralized (system-optimal) management and decentralized (user-optimal) decisions of traffic participants.SocialCars vision: sustainable traffic management.
